Chimney inspection levels (1, 2, 3)

Also known as: NFPA 211 inspection

NFPA 211 defines three inspection levels. Level 1: visual only, annual basic inspection. Level 2: more comprehensive, required at sale or after events. Level 3: invasive, requires demolition for hidden access.

NFPA 211 (Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances) defines three levels of chimney inspection.

Level 1: A basic visual inspection of accessible portions of the chimney from inside and outside the home. Standard for annual maintenance on a chimney that's been in continuous use without changes. Takes 30-60 minutes. Customer cost typically $150-$300.

Level 2: A more comprehensive inspection including video scanning of the flue interior, inspection of accessible joints, and evaluation of all components. Required when: the property is being sold, after a chimney fire, after seismic events, after lightning strikes, when changing fuels (e.g., wood to gas), or when modifying the chimney. Takes 1.5-3 hours. Customer cost $300-$600.

Level 3: An invasive inspection requiring removal of components — wall sections, attic spaces — to access concealed chimney parts. Required when Level 1 or 2 inspections reveal serious problems suggesting hidden damage. Takes a full day plus follow-up. Cost varies widely ($800-$3,000+) depending on demolition scope.

For chimney sweep operators, knowing which level is appropriate to recommend builds trust and protects against liability. Performing Level 1 inspections when Level 2 is clearly needed (post-fire, real estate transactions) creates legal exposure if undisclosed problems surface later.
