Full-service vs DIY hauling
Also known as: junk hauling models
Full-service: junk removal crew handles everything (load, haul, dispose). DIY: customer rents a dumpster or truck and handles loading themselves. Different price points and customer types.
Junk removal businesses operate in two distinct service models. Full-service junk removal sends a crew to the customer's location to load items into their truck and haul to disposal. The customer points at items; the crew does the work. Premium pricing reflects the labor, equipment, and disposal costs.
DIY hauling means the customer rents a roll-off dumpster (10-40 cubic yards delivered to the property) or rents a truck themselves and handles loading. The dumpster sits on the property for several days while the customer fills it; the company picks it up and hauls to disposal. Lower per-cubic-yard pricing reflects no labor cost.
For junk removal operators, the two models attract different customer segments. Full-service customers value convenience and time — typically priced 40-80% higher per volume than DIY. DIY customers value cost savings and control of the timeline — typically renovation projects, estate cleanouts done in stages, contractors disposing of construction debris. Most established junk removal operations offer both, with separate equipment fleets and pricing structures. Mixing the two models in a single business requires careful operational discipline.
