How to optimize your Google Business Profile (GBP)
GBP is the highest-leverage free marketing channel for service businesses. The completion checklist, review acquisition tactics, and ongoing maintenance that drives organic visibility.
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps when customers look for local services. Properly optimized profiles consistently outperform paid ads on cost per acquired customer because the channel is free.
Most service operators significantly underinvest in GBP. The 5-10 hours per month of focused GBP work generates more new customer acquisitions than equivalent paid spend in many markets. This playbook covers the complete optimization process.
The phases
Phase 1
Claim, verify, and complete the profile
Week 1-2
Claim profile: at business.google.com. Enter business name, address, phone, website, hours.
Verify profile: typically by postcard mailed to business address (5-7 days) or phone call. Required before profile fully active.
Complete every field: - Business name (exact match to legal name + signage) - Address (verified business address) - Service area ZIP codes (most service businesses serve area, not at fixed location) - Phone (call-tracking number if used) - Website (current company website) - Hours (accurate operating hours) - Services offered (use Google's predefined service categories where possible) - Service descriptions (each service with detailed text description) - Photos (10-30 photos minimum: trucks, crew, work in progress, completed work) - FAQ section (5-10 frequently asked questions with thoughtful answers) - Attributes (woman-owned, veteran-owned, accessibility features, etc.)
Checkpoints
- Profile claimed and verified
- All fields completed
- 10+ photos uploaded
- FAQ section populated
Phase 2
Build review velocity
Months 1-12
Reviews are the highest-leverage GBP activity. Profiles with 50+ reviews and 4.5+ ratings consistently outperform profiles with fewer or lower-rated reviews on organic search visibility.
Review request automation: send SMS review request 2-4 hours after job completion. Include direct link to Google review form (not generic GBP page). Personalized request from tech name + customer name converts dramatically better than generic.
Response to every review (positive and negative) within 24-48 hours. Google rewards response velocity. Customers reading reviews see active business management.
Negative review handling: respond professionally, address the specific concern, offer to resolve offline. Don't argue publicly. Most reasonable potential customers can distinguish unreasonable complaints from legitimate ones.
12-month target: 50+ reviews at 4.7+ rating, response rate 100%, review velocity 5-15 new reviews per month.
Checkpoints
- Review request automation active
- Response process for all reviews
- 50+ reviews at 4.5+ rating
Phase 3
Ongoing posts, photos, and activity
Ongoing
Weekly posts: GBP posts (updates, offers, events) signal active business. Weekly cadence keeps profile in active rotation. Topics: completed projects, seasonal service offerings, customer testimonials, team photos, FAQ content.
Monthly photo additions: new photos of recent work, team, equipment, customer-facing branding. Photo recency is signal Google uses for profile freshness.
Quarterly profile audit: verify all fields still accurate, update services as offerings change, refresh service descriptions, update photos.
Keyword optimization: service descriptions and FAQ should naturally include terms customers search for ('emergency plumber Atlanta', 'AC repair near me', 'water heater installation cost'). Don't keyword stuff; do include relevant terms naturally.
Tracking: monitor GBP insights — search appearances, profile views, calls, direction requests, website clicks. Track monthly to identify trends.
Checkpoints
- Weekly post cadence
- Monthly photo additions
- Quarterly profile audit
- GBP insights monitored monthly
Common pitfalls
Setting up profile and never updating
Static profiles drop in ranking over time. Active profiles (posts, photos, reviews) rank higher than inactive profiles with the same baseline information.
Slow response to reviews
Google rewards response velocity. Review responses within 24-48 hours significantly outperform week-late responses.
Keyword-stuffed service descriptions
Forced inclusion of 'best plumber Atlanta cheap emergency' style descriptions reads as spam to both Google and customers. Natural language with relevant terms wins.
What good looks like
- 50+ reviews at 4.7+ rating within 12 months
- Weekly post cadence sustained
- 100% response rate to reviews
- Steady increase in monthly profile views and calls
