Should I buy annual or quarterly pest control service?

Quarterly is the standard residential plan in most regions — covers seasonal pest cycles. Annual works in mild climates with single peak season. Monthly is overkill for most homes (commercial often justifies it).

Pest control plans are typically structured around the seasonal pest pressure in your region. The right cadence is the one that actually protects you between visits.

Quarterly (every 3 months) — most common:

  • Covers spring (ant + termite emergence), summer (mosquito + wasp), fall (rodent + cluster fly), winter (overwintering pests)
  • Each visit is preventive treatment + inspection
  • Typical cost: $75-$125 per visit, $300-$500/year
  • Right for most US residential markets

Bi-monthly (every 2 months):

  • Better protection in heavy-pest regions (Florida, Texas Gulf Coast, southern Louisiana)
  • Same scope per visit, more frequency
  • Typical cost: $50-$85 per visit, $300-$510/year
  • Right for high-humidity, heavy-pest areas or heavy-tree-cover properties

Monthly:

  • Commercial standard (restaurants, food service, multi-family)
  • Residential overkill except in extreme cases (neighborhood-level issues, immunocompromised resident, history of severe infestations)
  • Typical cost: $35-$65 per visit, $420-$780/year

Annual:

  • Single visit per year (typically spring or summer)
  • Works in mild climates with concentrated pest season
  • Often combined with one targeted seasonal service (e.g. annual termite warranty inspection alone)
  • Typical cost: $200-$400 for a single comprehensive treatment
  • Right for low-pressure regions or homes with minimal pest history

The economic comparison:

  • Quarterly residential: $300-$500/year, year-round protection
  • Annual one-shot: $200-$400/year, less protection, more variance
  • Monthly: $420-$780/year, premium protection (often overkill)

Most residential customers in most US markets get the best ROI from quarterly. The exceptions:

  • If you live in a high-rise condo with no ground-floor entry points: annual or as-needed is probably enough.
  • If you have severe allergies or immunocompromised residents: bi-monthly or monthly justifies the extra cost.
  • If you have ongoing termite warranty: that's a separate annual cycle on top of general pest.

What's typically included in each visit:

  • Exterior perimeter treatment (typical ~10 ft from foundation)
  • Spider web/wasp nest removal at eaves and overhangs
  • Interior treatment of problem areas (kitchen, bathroom, basement, garage)
  • Inspection for new pest pressure (tracks, droppings, conducive conditions)
  • Documentation of chemicals used (required by EPA + state regulators)

Red flags in pest control plans:

  • "Free quarterly with annual prepay" — verify the cancellation terms
  • "Lifetime warranty" — usually means you pay for any retreatment regardless
  • Sub-$50/month residential (often loss-leader for upsell into termite/rodent specialty)
  • Heavy upsell during routine visits (signal of poor sales practices)
