Green cleaning
Also known as: eco-friendly cleaning, non-toxic cleaning
Cleaning service using non-toxic, biodegradable, or certified-eco products. Higher cost, lower chemical exposure for residents, growing customer demand particularly among families with children or pets.
Green cleaning uses products certified by third-party programs (Green Seal, EcoLogo, EPA Safer Choice) or homemade alternatives (vinegar, baking soda, castile soap-based) instead of conventional cleaning chemicals. The goal is reduced chemical exposure for occupants and reduced environmental impact from manufacturing and disposal.
Customer demand for green cleaning has grown steadily. Common drivers: families with infants or young children (chemical sensitivity concerns), households with pets (animals' lower body mass + close contact with treated surfaces), customers with allergies or asthma (conventional cleaners can trigger flare-ups), and environmentally-motivated customers generally.
The trade-offs: green products are typically less aggressive on heavy soils, requiring more time or repeat application. Cost per visit is 10-20% higher due to product cost. For cleaning operators, offering green cleaning as a tier (alongside standard) opens a customer segment that pays a premium and tends to be more loyal. Marketing the service requires clarity about what 'green' means — third-party certifications carry more credibility than self-claimed environmental benefits.
